- Summary:
-
Aesthetic value enhances personal and professional lives and contributes to people's environment. If one defines the aesthetic sense as the faculty that enables one to modify the quality of his or her environment, then it follows that aesthetic education should be a means to achieve this end. In order for that to happen, there must be changes both in the schools and in the wider community to allow children the fullest opportunity to develop and use this aesthetic sense, act on their environment as they learn, and be engaged with the environment rather than merely passively responding to it. This document examines: (1) defining aesthetics in education; (2) the aesthetic experience; (3) creating an aesthetic climate; (4) teaching curriculum content through the arts; (5) educating teachers in aesthetics; and (6) evaluating the aesthetic dimension. The document concludes with 25 references. (MM)
