An overview of Australian apprentices and trainees in 1997 includes the following information about their characteristics: (1) 1.4 percent of the Australian population were involved in an apprenticeship or traineeship, with participation among males (2.2 percent) much higher than among females (0.6 percent); (2) participation was highest in the 15-19 age group; (3) apprentices and trainees enrolled in an average of 1.2 courses, similar to that for all vocational education and training (VET) students; (4) apprentices and trainees were enrolled in higher-level courses than students in the general population; (5) almost 3 percent of the apprentices and trainees were of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander origin; (6) 3.4 percent of apprentices and trainees had a disability; (7) 7.5 percent of apprentices and trainees were not born in Australia, and 7.1 percent spoke a language other than English at home; (8) almost half of the apprentices and trainees had completed secondary education; and (9) 35 percent of apprentices and trainees lived in a rural or remote area. The Introduction refers to "a companion volume which provides detailed information about off-the-job training undertaken by apprentices and trainers as part of their contract of training." The attached separately-published 12-page "At a Glance" publication is that companion volume. (KC)
