The bulk of the papers in MS 9284 comprises 48 files containing correspondence, drafts and other papers relating to John Litten's work with children after coming to Australia, especially his involvement in the organisation of the emigration of British orphans to Australia. They also refer to his work for the National Children's Home in Australia and as a Methodist minister in Ringwood Parish in Melbourne. Box 29 comprises two self bound volumes of music compiled by John Howard Litten for children in homes to sing in public performances as a fundraising measure. The rest of the collection includes correspondence, diaries, notes and drafts of order of service, sermons, talks, lectures and other writings. There are also drafts of Litten's biography by Audrey O'Dell and a biographical essay by Michael Moore. Some of the correspondents are F.J. Potter (Dr Barnado's Homes, London), T.O. Buck (financial secretary of NCH, London), Howard Watkin-Jones, Betty Coleman and Reverend John W. Waterhouse (NCH, London) (28 boxes).

John Howard Litten was a Methodist minister in Middlesex, England and Melbourne, Victoria. Litten was principal of the National Children's Home (NCH) in London, 1933-1950. He came to Sydney in 1950 and moved to Melbourne in 1952, where he became the minister for the Ringwood-Elwood Parish and continued his work with children's homes and the children's emigration scheme in Australia. Litten died in England in 1954.
