This booklet is designed to help parents and community members answer questions about assessment in the context of the Vermont Framework of Standards, the Equal Education Opportunity Act of 1997, and other statewide initiatives. Assessment is changing in Vermont in response to new legislative mandates that call for standards-based assessment designed to improve student learning. Parents are familiar with paper-and-pencil test, but they are less familiar with new types of performance based assessment, including portfolios, and new types of scoring, such as check lists and rubrics. In Vermont, all students will participate in the Vermont Comprehensive Assessment System, which will track trends across the state over time. Questions parents and community members frequently ask about assessment are answered. (SLD)
