This KIDS COUNT databook is the fifth annual profile examining statewide trends in the well-being of Rhode Island's children. The statistical portrait is based on 30 indicators in 5 areas: (1) family and community (covering child population and children in single-parent families); (2) economic well-being (covering median household income, cost of rent, children in poverty, children in the Family Independence Program, children in families receiving food stamps, and children receiving school breakfast); (3) health (covering children's health insurance; women and children receiving WIC; women with delayed prenatal care; low birth weight infants; infant mortality; children with lead poisoning; births to teens; alcohol, drug, and cigarette use by teens; children with asthma; and additional children's health issues); (4) safety (covering child deaths, teen deaths, homeless children, homeless youth, juveniles referred to family court, and child abuse and neglect); and (5) education (covering infant and preschool child care, children enrolled in Head Start, school-age child care, fourth-grade reading proficiency, children enrolled in special education, high school graduation rate, and teens not in school and not working). The report defines each indicator, describes its significance and trends, provides information on intervention programs, and presents relevant data for the state, each city and town, and an aggregate of the five cities with the highest child poverty rates. The report concludes with a description of the methodology and acknowledgements. (EV)
