This brief is designed to help professional developers see what goes into making an effective support program for National Board for Professional Teaching Standards candidates. There is no one best way to construct a support program, though all programs must address two fundamental needs: helping candidates understand and manage the assessment process and helping them become better at analyzing student work. To help candidates manage the assessment process, support programs commonly work with them to: clarify the commitment, manage expectations, generate administrative support, offer structure, enhance candidate communication skills, and prepare for the assessment center experience. Helping candidates become more analytical about their own teaching involves setting the stage for focused examination, facilitating discussions, grouping by certificate area, individualizing support, and identifying appropriate support. Sidebars include: supporting the support providers; the sprouting of support programs; different prompts for different certificates; districts and states see the light; turning to the experts; and resources and references.
