- Summary:
-
Disagreements often lead to confrontations that contribute more to an escalation of a conflict rather than to its resolution. This bulletin shows how to start and carry out a community mediation program that helps prevent violence. Mediation can reduce violence in neighborhoods and schools. Peer mediation is a way of handling conflicts and preventing violence in middle and high schools. Six planning steps aid in the success of a mediation program. The steps include the following: (1) identify the types of conflict to be addressed; (2) decide when to use mediation; (3) recruit mediators; (4) train mediators; (5) identify disputants; and (6) select a neutral location for mediation hearings. Suggestions are given on how to keep a mediation program going, such as including an evaluation plan to ensure success. (JDM)
