In 1991, the staff of the Houston Cole Library (Jacksonville State University, Alabama) published its first formal "Collection Management and Development Policy." This was used as a guide in conducting a complete assessment of the Library's collections. This second edition is a revision of the 1991 publication. The first section is an introduction that includes the following information: purpose of the policy statement and audience; general description of the institution and clientele served; mission statement and goals of the collection management and development program; Library's official stance on intellectual freedom, censorship, and copyright issues; brief overview of the collection; organization of the collection management and development program; budget structure; relationship to policies and programs for management of collections; cooperative collection development agreements; and policies related to equipment purchase and technical support for on-site and remote electronic files and texts. The second section reports the general collection management and development policy, discussing policies on all categories of acquisitions/materials and all related library functions, and including selection criteria and criteria for de-selection/replacement. The next section, and larger part of the document, consists of a series of narrative statements describing the Library's collections for the following subject areas: Agriculture; the Alabama Gallery; American Literature; Art; Audio-Visual; Auxiliary Sciences of History; Biology; Chemistry; Commerce and Business Administration; Communication; Criminal Justice; Drama; Education; Emergency Management; English Literature; Environmental Sciences; Family and Consumer Sciences; General Works; Geography and Anthropology; Geology; Government Documents; Health, Physical Education, and Recreation; History; Languages and Related Literatures; Law; Library Science and Bibliography; Mathematical, Computing, and Information Sciences; Military Science; Music; Nursing; Philosophy, Ethics and Religion; Physics and Engineering; Political Science and Public Administration; Psychology; Sociology and Social Work; Technology; and Western European Literatures. Included in appendices are a list of definitions of collection level indicators, collection assessment tools, standing orders, and electronic databases. Includes an index. (AEF)
