The purpose of this publication is to provide a forum through which National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) members can be well informed about compelling, complex, timely issues that transcend grade levels in mathematics education. This issue focuses on mathematics curriculum issues and standards. In the United States and Canada, each of the following plays a role in determining what mathematics is taught to students in grades K-12: state or provincial authorities, standardized-test designers, recommendations of professional organizations, college-entrance requirements, textbooks, local school boards, and teachers in their classrooms. People in a broad range of positions present their views on the wisdom of decisions being made at various levels. (ASK)
