This report addresses some questions about the role of college faculty in distance education in the fall term of 1998 using data from the 1999 National Study of Postsecondary Faculty (NSOPF:99) for 960 institutions and 28,704 faculty members. In NSOPF:99, instructional faculty and staff at two- and four-year institutions were asked questions about a wide range of issues. The analysis in this report focuses on whether instructional faculty and staff indicated that they taught at least one distance education class. The NSOPF:99 faculty questionnaire lacked detailed questions about modes of technology, training, and instructional practices in individual distance education courses, but the data do permit descriptions of national patterns of faculty involvement in distance education, and they describe the relationship of participation in distance education to other aspects of faculty work. Across the United States, about 6% of instructional faculty and staff who reported teaching for-credit classes indicated that they taught at least one distance education class, and about 9% reported teaching at least one class in a non-face-to-face mode. Overall, the teaching load appears somewhat higher for instructional faculty and staff teaching distance classes than for those not doing so. However, relatively few differences for most variables were found between faculty teaching distance classes and their colleagues not doing so. Appendixes contain a glossary, technical notes, and supplemental tables. (Contains 38 tables, 12 figures, and 30 references.) (SLD)
