Letters of Joseph Paul Gaimard and Jean René Constant Quoy to Louis de Freycinet, 1826 February 15-1831 November 11 [manuscript]

Joseph Paul Gaimard was a French naturalist, surgeon and explorer who sailed with Louis de Freycinet on the Uranie in 1817 and with Dumont d'Urville on the Astrolabe that left Toulon in 1826. Gaimard was friend and principal co-correspondent to Louis de Freycinet on the latter voyage. The Astrolabe voyage visited Australia, New Zealand and Fiji. He later published scientific volumes on the outcomes of the voyages.

Jean René Constant Quoy was a French explorer and naturalist who sailed with Louis de Freycinet on the Uranie in 1817 and subsequently with Dumont D'Urville on the ship Astrolabe from 1826, with instructions to visit Australia, New Zealand and Fiji. He was friend and co-correspondent with Joseph Paul Gaimard to Louis de Freycinet.

Louis Claude Desaulses de Freycinet was a cartographic surveyor and naturalist. In 1800 he joined an expedition under Nicolas Baudin to explore the south and south-west coasts of Australia in the ships Naturaliste and Geographe. He commanded an expedition to circumnavigate the globe and conduct research into the shape of the Earth, meteorology and terrestrial magnetism, sailing from Toulon in September 1817 in the Uranie with his wife Rose, who secreted herself aboard. He set up an observatory at Shark Bay and charted the coastal regions in 1818, and sailed for Timor and various parts of the Pacific before landing in Port Jackson late in 1819. The Uranie was wrecked on the Falkland Islands on the return voyage to France.
