- Biography/History:
-
Actor, playwright, theatrical director and entrepreneur. Edmund Duggan was born in Lismore, Ireland, and, at the age of nine, migrated with his parents to Victoria. His early theatrical activity included the Roscians, an amateur Shakespeare society he founded in Melbourne. He went on to tour widely as an actor and with his own theatrical company. From 1900-1912 and 1917-1930, he was an actor and stage director for his brother-in-law, the theatrical manager, William Anderson. He also collaborated with actor Albert (Bert) Bailey, writing and adapting several works including the melodramas The squatter's daughter (1907) and The man from outback (1909). Some of their works were presented under the combined pseudonym of Albert Edmunds. In 1920, Duggan produced the Melbourne revival of On our selection, which had been first staged by Duggan and Bailey in 1912. As an actor Duggan favoured Irish and Jewish roles, and, in 1928, starred as Dad Rudd in The Rudd family, Steele Rudd's play he also directed. Duggan died in Melbourne in 1938.
