- Summary:

1) Journal of a voyage from Liverpool to Melbourne, May-July 1854, on the Red Jacket. It is a day-to-day record of the voyage, noting events and commenting on passengers and crew as well as weather conditions and distance travelled. The journal also contains notes referring to land sales around Melbourne, costs of buildings, business transactions (especially with George Squiers) and rough sketches of the campsites on the goldfields around Castlemaine, Victoria. 2) Journal of a voyage from Melbourne to England via New Zealand, commencing April 1856, on the New Great Britain. Chiefly concerned with weather conditions and notes also the latitude and longitude and the distance covered each day. The journal ends on 26 July as the ship nears England.
- Biography/History:

Gold prospector and builder. He was in his late forties when he left his home in Devon, England, with several fellow-townsmen to try his luck on the goldfields of Victoria. He is believed to have bought some land outside Melbourne.
