Karl Rahner famously wrote: "The economic Trinity is the immanent Trinity, and vice versa" in 1967. From this time onwards, Rahner's Rule, has become the norm for conceiving the relationship between the Trinity in the economy of salvation and God's eternal inner life. Evangelical theologians currently employ Rahner's Rule (RR) in a variety of ways. One of the most popular is the "Strict Realist Reading" (SRR) whereby trinitarian relationships in salvation history are taken to mirror eternal relationships within God. As an Evangelical project, this thesis brings this norm into conversation with the witness of Scripture in order to assess its viability. In so doing possible troubling issues arise from the application of the SRR of RR to the narrative of Luke-Acts.
These issues include the subordination of the Father's will to the Son's will, the eternal obedience of God the Son to God the Father, the relationship between the Father's will and the Son's will, the ascension of God the Son, the Spirit as the eternal generator of God the Son, Jesus' double reception of the Spirit, and the reverse successive subordinations of the Son and the Spirit to each other. In addition, the narrative of Luke-Acts presents the reader with significant historical-salvation qualifiers upon the nature of the triune relationships it records. Various aspects of salvation history act as restrictions or limitations which prevent reading triune relations from salvation history into God's eternal being.
These qualifiers include the facts that: Jesus' work in the economy of salvation was carried out in his state of humiliation, his messianic vocation entailed a new obedience to God the Father, the fluidity of actor and action in terms of the ad extra revelation and of soteriological works by the Father and the Son, the veiling of Jesus' glory by means of his humanity, the future revelation of Jesus' glory, and Jesus' limited knowledge of God the Father in the economy of salvation. In view of these factors this thesis suggests that the SRR of RR may be shown to be a questionable theory once it is brought into conversation with Scripture. The weakness of the SRR of RR as a theory is highlighted via the employment of Erickson's criteria for strong theories.
