Russell Saffron talks about his parents being unmarried; his half brothers, Frankie and Roy in Gordon Boys Home; mother's husband, Roy Dean serving overseas during WWII, an itinerant worker he accepted all the mother's nine children; his memories of arriving at Melbourne Orphanage with father and Neil, went into Bubs and Neil into Junior Boys; talks of life and communal living in the orphanage; sharing toys; the orphanage farm; chores; cottage parents; fortnightly visits from father; sent up to Junior boys at age 6, contact with Neil; learning to defend himself; running away; how Matron was fair but tough; good and bad experiences at the orphanage; going to the 1956 Olympic Games; catching up with brother when he becomes a senior boy; difficulties in later life because of missed schooling; wanting to be a diesel mechanic in the Army but maths not good enough; chillblains; CMF Army Reserve; church on Sundays; difficulties in forming friendships; discipline in Senior Boys; Superintendent Janecky improved food, provided birthday cakes; employing more qualified people; discovers father had been paying for his keep; lack of mother's love; mother's place at Werribee, meeting other siblings, hating girls; looks into family background; first girlfriend; first job at 14 assisting gardener at orphanage, job at Fish Creek with a family on farm; tries to find the childhood he never had; mentions other jobs; Robinvale and his father; meeting Lynette (1966), marriage; goes to Melbourne Orphanage reunions; moves to Melbourne; redundant after 16 years with Powell Duffryn Terminals; job with McKillop Family Services; caring for boys; football coaching; contacts from the orphanage; Parkinson's Disease; Forgotten Australians.
