May Chandler was born in the United Kingdom. Due to family difficulties she and her siblings were placed into a 'Girls Home' (Hope Cottage) in Essex. May was selected to come to Australia under the umbrella of the Barnardo organisation. She describes her time in England; the trip to Australia; upon arrival being taken to the Barnardo's home in Picton, N.S.W. and then to Ashfield in Sydney; after leaving school, working in a clothing factory; moving to the Central West town of Peak Hill as a domestic; her marriage and remaining in Peak Hill.
