- Biography/History:
-
The Koonibba mission was established in 1898 at a time when the land use of the west coast of South Australia was shifting from pastoralism to agriculture. Aboriginal people used the area as they would any other camp, maintaining their own cultural and social organisations. When the first missionary C.A. Wiebusch arrived in 1901, a number of buildings had already been constructed. The first mission church at Koonibba was built by Thomas Richards. The second church was built in 1907 and the original church was converted into the school for children removed from their mothers. The Koonibba Children's Home was established by the Lutheran Church in 1913 as part of the Koonibba Mission Station. The home initially accommodated 28 children but later increased to up to 70 and closed later in 1963.--Information from reference sources and acquisitions documentation.
