Rachael Swain grew up in New Zealand, South Island, talks about her childhood; her parents, their backgrounds and their interests; participating in the National Fencing Championships; seeing herself as visual performance artist; growing up in artisan communes; Maori land-rights; her involvement with Body Weather and physical theatre; joining Drama Action Centre in Sydney; her interest in Maori and French language; her education and development in performing arts; stopping competition fencing; Aboriginal Australians; road trip; Northern Territory; Neil Cameron; community theatres and indigenous communities. Swain discusses the people and companies influenced her development as a performance artist in Sydney; touring in Europe; beginning to direct; establishing Marrugeku; indigenous dancers and artists; Mimi, piece formed in Arnhem Land; touring and company difficulties; her injury; developing a multi-disciplinary approach; her large touring show for outside arenas and remote locations; developing Incognita with Stalker Theatre Company; Koen Augustijnen; moving large-scale works to indoor production; interracial narrative in her work; Buru; Yawuru; Shanghai Lady Killer; PhD on intercultural indigenous performance; reflects of her time at DasArts in Amsterdam; developing an understanding of her own work; becoming involved in producing and developing art forms; using indigenous knowledge structures to develop new performance languages.
