- In May 1971, nineteen Australians spent a month in China as part of a trip organised by the Australia-China Friendship Society. It was the first trip to China, post-1949 of an Australian group of that size. The delegation was lead by Ted Bull, who was Secretary of the Melbourne branch of the Waterside Workers Federation and Vice-Chairman of the Communist Party of Australia (Marxist-Leninist). Many of the delegates were political activists and communists, though there were several linguists who were not political. The project aims to show how the trip was significant in terms of how some Australians campaigned for the recognition of the People's Republic of China by the Australian government and for insights into China during a year in which the cultural revolution was still apparent. Diplomatic relations between the two countries were established on 21 December 1972.
