The purpose of this Umanakaina book on local stories is to encourage the Umanakaina speaking people to appreciate their own stories and help them to read better in their own language. Nearly all of these stories were compiled during a Writer's Workshop attended by 98 Umanakaina people in December 1990. The Umanakaina people number around 2,400 and live in the Milne Bay Province of Papua New Guinea.
