Colleen Clifford, the Grande Dame of Australian theatre, began her stage career in New Zealand during the 1920s but found fame in England on the West End stage, on BBC Radio and on the first television transmissions. During the Second World War she entertained the troops before moving to Washington where her husband was air attaché to the British Embassy. After his death she moved to Australia and became a theatrical institution as an actress, teacher and director. She founded the Theatre Guild of Perth, delighted audiences with her legendary one woman show, and graced the stage in countless box office hits. Her screen credits included the movie Careful, He Might Hear You and on television she appeared in series such as The Young Doctors, Prisoner and A Country Practice. She worked into her nineties and was a Royal command performer.
