Big Knitted Welcome Mat is a community textile project led by contemporary artist Kate Just as part of the City of Greater Dandenong's Cultural Threads Textile Celebration in August 2014. Over one month, Just invited community members, individuals and school groups to join her in knitting and crocheting squares in a vacant window fronted space called The Shard in Dandenong's Civic Centre. The pieces were assembled into an oversized, multicultural red mat with the word WELCOME in oversized white block letters. Big Knitted Welcome Mat reflects the inclusive, multicultural community of the City of Greater Dandenong, which has been a Refugee Welcome Zone since 2002.
