- A statement prepared by Matthew Flinders concerning the variation of the magnetic needle, dated London, Aug. 26, 1812. Includes a covering letter from the Admiralty, dated 18th September, 1812, addressed to the captain, etc. of His Majesty's vessels, signed by Sir John Barrow; and a covering letter from the Admiralty, dated 21st Sept. 1812 addressed to Rear Admiral Tyler and signed by Sir John Barrow.
- National Library's SR copy consists solely of the printed covering letter from the Admiralty, dated 28th Jan. 1813, which is not signed by Barrow, and the letter by Flinders. The letter from John Barrow, printed probably as an internal 'memo' to Royal Navy officers, communicates Captain Flinders' observations and recommendations made on "the course of my voyage in H. M. Sloop Investigator, for completing the discovery of New Holland and New South Wales". Flinders' remarks relate to variations in azimuth compass readings, and he compares his findings with those by Captains Cook and Vancouver, and recommends additional experiments. Barrow's letter refers to a previous "Circular Letter" on the subject sent out on 21st September, 1812 (the State Library of NSW copy of this letter is addressed to Rear Admiral Tyler, one of twenty recepients; the State Library of NSW also holds an earlier transmittal letter, dated 18th September 1812. The National Library copy has the watermark of J. Hayes, 1812, and a manuscript note in red ink at foot of page "This communication was made to certain officers of the Navy and was not published (I believe...) Captain Flinders died on .... J. Lee 1836." Lee is probably the astronomer John Lee (1783 -1866).
