H. R. Balfour was an Australian anthropologist, who worked mainly in the Kimberley and the Northern Territory.

- The photograph is mounted inside a printed Christmas card.
- Inscriptions: "All Good Wishes for Christmas and the New Year from H. R. Balfour"--Printed on front of card; "Woorinyan, 45 Hopetoun Road, Toorak, S.E. 2"--Printed on front of card; "Australites (Australian Tektites). These bodies of brownish black glass, forming part of the collection of H. R. Balfour, have variously been called "blackfellows' buttons", "emu-eyes", "staring-eyes", etc. In his natural state, however the aborigine had no use for buttons as such. These australites are of extra-terrestrial origin, and although it is believed that they were formed as glass bodies approximately 35 million years ago, they did not fall to earth until only a few thousand years back from the present time."--Printed inside card opposite photgraph; "with kindest thoughts to you. H.R.B. 1958/9."--In ink on back of card.
