Living Waters, initiated by the Sordello Missana Collection, Antibes, is part of a larger Indigenous Australian art exhibition, Taba Naba, at the Oceanographic Museum Monaco for the summer of 2016. Living Waters has arisen from a collaborative partnership between the Sordello Missana Collection and various institutions and private and public collections including Buku-Larrnggay Mulka Centre, Yirrkala, AAMU: Museum of Contemporary Aboriginal art (Utrecht), the Australian National Maritime Museum (ANMM), Sydney, and the Kerry Stokes Collection, Perth. Living Waters has two themes that showcase Indigenous knowledge systems concerning the ecological and cosmological continuums of fresh and salt water as essential to life and the ocean as a vehicle of scientific inquiry and colonization. The exhibition comprises over 100 works by nearly 60 artists in many different media, including paintings on canvas and bark, photography, video, prints, shellwork and site-specific installations. Curated by Dr Erica Izett (Independent Curator, Sydney), Dr George Petitjean (Visual Director AAMU, Utrecht) and Donna Carstens (ANMM Sydney), Living Waters combines key remote and urban art from Australian and European collections, and collaborative works between Indigenous and non-Indigenous artists. One of the features of the exhibition is that the display links contemporary art concerns to scientific contexts. In association with Buku-Larrnggay Mulka Centre in Yirrkala, the artists Barayuwa Munungurr, Whaiora Tukaki and Ruark Lewis will converge in Monaco for the realisation of the installation.Mununggurr's designs correspond with mythological events relating to the death of an ancestral whale called Mirinyuu on the beaches of the Munyuku saltwater estate of Yarrinya within Blue Mud Bay. The life-size model whale on permanent display in the Prince Albert I hall will be camouflaged with Yolngu clan designs, which have been photographically enlarged from a bark painting by Mununggurr on display in the exhibition and digitally printed onto adhesive mural paper. Camouflage is an Indigenous aesthetic strategy used in ceremony and art to protect the uninitiated from the power and sacred knowledge of Indigenous law. Living Waters aims to create a dialogue between Indigenous and Western knowledge production, their transcultural histories and ideas, and thereby challenge existing understandings of Indigenous art.--Curator's Foreword, Acknowledgements [English].
