Mainly letters, arranged chronologically. Correspondents include Polding, Dr Brewer, Prior Barber, Father Brown, Bishop Slater, Ullathorne, Rev. C. Conolly (Van Dieman's Land), Bishop Salvado (New Norcia), Henry Gregory, Bishop Davis, Thomas Heptonstall (Polding's cousin), various monks from St. Mary's, Sydney and Dr Goold (Melbourne). Topics include finance, general ecclesiastical affairs, the administration of Downside, the missions in New South Wales, Van Dieman's Land and Mauritius, activities of personnel (especially Polding), life in the colonies, both secular and religious, developments on Norfolk Island, Victoria and New Zealand are reported and the attitude of government and press to Catholics.

Downside Abbey was a Benedictine house founded in Somerset, England, in the late 1700s. It supplied some priests for Australia, the first Benedictine appointee being William Ullathorne who arrived in 1833, the second being John Bede Polding, chosen as Australia's first Catholic bishop in 1834.
