MS 1454 comprises correspondence, articles, press cuttings, photographs, and publicity material relating to Conder's varied involvement with penal systems, broadcasting and sport. Unsigned thesis without title page on the historical, social and economic aspects of penal systems in Australia and French Caledonia. Correspondence, photographs, articles and cuttings on the British, Australian and New Zealand Antarctic Research Expedition 1929-30, on the S.Y. Discovery. Includes letters from Sir Douglas Mawson and Captain Kenneth MacKenzie. Four albums of cuttings, photographs, letters articles and statistics on Langwarrin Camp, venereal disease, Pentridge Gaol and penology in general. One album of cuttings on a bribery charge brought against Conder in 1930.

Walter Tasman Conder served in the A.I.F. 1914-1920 and again as Major 1939-1945; he was Governor of Pentridge Gaol 1920-1923 and also earlier was O.C. in Lanwarrin Camp (which began as a prisoner of war camp in 1914 but in 1915 was converted to a sanitorium for military patients suffering from venereal disease); from 1924 to 1934 he was General Manager of J.C. Williamson Limited, and from 1934 to 1936 he was General Manager of the Australian Broadcasting Commission.
