- Biography/History:

Elizabeth Lillian Woolcock (nee Oliver, 1848-1873) wed widower Thomas Woolcock in 1867. Thomas Woolcock's death on 4 September 1873 was attributed to mercury poisoning. Elizabeth was convicted for Thomas's murder and wrote a confession which was widely published in Australian newspapers. Found guilty by a jury, the judge sentenced her to hang on 30 December 1873. Woolcock was the only woman to die in this manner in South Australia.
