These papers document such subjects as colonial appointments; constitutional disputes in Australia; inter-colonial relations; the Victorian goldfields; the New Zealand Company; the Church in the colonies; the introduction of coloured labour; colonial defences; transportation to Western Australia; the Maori Wars and the confiscation of Maori lands; and American claims to Fiji. Amongst the correspondents are Queen Victoria, W.E. Gladstone, Sir William Denison, Sir John Young, C.J. La Trobe, Sir Charles Fitzroy, Sir Charles Hotham, T.G. Browne, Sir George Grey, and Bihop G.A. Selwyn.
