Fitzgerald was born in Sydney in 1902. Best known as a poet and essayist, some of his published works won significant literary awards. In 1951 he was awarded an OBE for services to literature. Publications include To meet the sun (1929), Moonlight acre (1938), Heemskerk Shoals (1949), Between two tides (1952), The wind at your door (1959), Forty years poems (1965)
