Subject files - mostly newspaper cuttings and covering the period 1939-1945 - make up the bulk of the papers. The files cover such topics as primary and secondary industries, social services, arbitration, defence, the Labor Party's attitude to conscription, referenda (1936, 1945), Commonwealth powers of deportation (1925), regulation of banking, trade agreements (Ottawa, 1932 and 1938) and the United Nations. There are a few letters among the files (including some from John Curtin) as well as roneoed typescript notes, extracts from Hansard, texts of speeches and broadcasts, pamphlets, A.L.P. newspapers and bulletins A.L.P. federal conference agenda (1940, 1943, 1945), press statements, copies of memos parliamentary papers, Royal Commission reports, copies of cables, and speeches by H.V. Evatt. The collection also contains E.L. Piesse papres, in the form of letters, texts of broadcasts, and newspaper clippings, all dealing with defence and dated 1938.

Eric Tonkin was born and educated in Adelaide. He was private secretary to Prime Ministers John Curtin and J. B. Chifley from 1941 until 1949, when he was appointed a Commonwealth Conciliation Commisioner
