Collection of family snapshots, mostly from the 1930s documenting the daily activities and school life of the Thursday and Badu Islands. Thursday Island was the administrative hub of the Torres Strait. The collection includes the social life of the inhabitants of the islands, activities such as fishing and sailing, a shark hunt and the 50th Jubilee Celebrations of 1927, picnics on Wai-Weer Islet and Hammond Island, parties, boat races and other school and social gatherings, including the landing of the first aircraft on Thursday Island. Also includes group portraits of school children which depicts integrated social and racial groups of the time. Habitation and land use on the islands, buildings, the harbours with fishing and pearling vessels, civil construction and the open air theatre on Thursday Island--Information from acquisitions documentation.
- Biography/History:

Photographs taken by Jean Ethel Mathams (nee Sullivan) and her father Arthur Sullivan. Jean arrived on the Island around 1924 and was in boarding school in Warwick between 1937 to 1939. There are photographs of the war years, until the family were evacuated as the Japanese Army came closer. After the War, Jean was married and remained in Brisbane.--Information from acquisitions documentation.
