As Gerald Glynn writes in the Preface to his "Poems from Paris and other places", this poem, "Letter from Batavia", "is my tribute to Captain James Cook, navigator, cartographer and also, as the poem reminds us, husband and father." The salutation addresses "My Dear Betsy" and the valedictory farewell reads, "I am, and always will be, / your devoted, loving husband, / James". The poem was written in 1993.
