This collection comprises general, personal and business correspondence; writings by Dengate including sketches, poetry, verse and music; family photographs and photographs of Dengate's performances; and personal papers including tributes following Dengate's death.

John Dengate was a musician, teacher, singer and songwriter in the Australian traditional folk style. His prodigious output of songs, verse and satire gave unique insight into Australian life with his comments on social and political events. As a teacher he had an immense influence on numerous performers and writers. He won awards for his writing and accolades for his performances at Folk Festivals, and he was known as one of the National Folk Treasures. He was awarded Life Membership of N.S.W. Folk Federation and Bush Music Club. Dengate's writings and memories were recorded regularly: first by John Meredith, then by Chris Woodland and others at the National Library's Oral History and Folklore Branch.
