- Summary:
-
A printed playbill for a mixed performance of two plays: (1) the main bill, Napoleon Buonaparte, with James Prescott Warde (1792-1840) in the lead role, providing a detailed listing of personnel for each of the six parts; and (2) Neuha's cave, or, the South Sea mutineers. "Byron's The Island, Or Christian and his Comrades (1823) was based, according to Byron, partly on 'the Mutiny of the Bounty in the South Seas (in 1789)' and also on Mariner's An Account of the Natives of the Tonga Islands (1817). This playbill advertises, as the evening's second play, 'Neuha's Cave', a dramatic rendering of Byron's poem, acted by a cast that includes Captain Boldweather of the Narcissa, mutineers, and Islanders (notably Fegee, Sovereign of the Tonga, or Friendly Islands)." Neuha's Cave was produced under the direction of Charles Farley (1771-1859), the music composed by George Frederick Stansbury (1800-1845), and Captain Boldweather played by Mr. Baker, and Neuha (Daughter of the Chief) by Miss Taylor. -Based on a catalogue listing from Meridian Rare Books, February 2018.
