Biologist and naturalist. John Henry Calaby was born at Creswick, Victoria in 1922. He graduated from the Ballarat School of Mines with a Diploma in Applied Chemistry in 1942 and received an Honorary Doctor of Science degree from the Australian National University in 1977. Calaby began his career with the then Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (later the CSIRO) in 1945 in the Division of Entomology. He worked for the CSIRO Wildlife Survey Section from 1950-1987. He was an Honorary Research Fellow in the Division of Wildlife and Ecology from 1987 until his death in 1998. Among other publications, Calaby wrote So much that is new: Baldwin Spencer, 1860-1929, a biography (with D.J. Mulvaney, 1985). Calaby became a foundation member of the Australian Mammal Society in 1958 and was awarded the Society's Troughton Medal in 1983. In 1994 Calaby was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) for service to science, particularly in the fields of zoology and ecology and to Australian mammology. Thirty species across the animal kingdom are named after him. Calaby is commemorated by the John Calaby Resources Centre, CSIRO Division of Wildlife and Ecology.
