The Peppercorn Tree is a memoir of the author's childhood growing up in post World War 2 Sydney suburbia. It traces the era in great detail, noting the pre-TV, pre-computer era when people, especially children, had to create their own entertainment and reading was popular. The author describes the neighbours, the relatives, her school experience, courtship and marriage, always with an eye to the uniqueness of the era. In the latter part of the book she shows how her childhood influenced her later life in so many ways, psychological, educational and even spiritual. She examines several famous Australian writers who have discussed how suburbia has affected Australian culture and history. This is a book for all those born just before, during, or after the Second World War who grew up in city suburbia.
