Correspondence of Lord Derby relating to zoological expeditions, collections and collectors of animal and bird specimens, extinct New Zealand birds, and other natural history matters. Primarily relate to Australia and New Zealand, but also the Philippines, Malaya, Borneo , Sarawak and other countries. Major correspondents include J. Gray, J. Gould, Sir Robert Heron, D. Mitchell and T. Whitfield. Also includes an account of Java, Madura and Dutch East Indies in the 18th century, possibly by Sir Stamford Raffles, and a manuscript on state of New Zealand, n.d.

Whig M.P. 1796-1832. President of Linnean Society, 1828-33. President of Zoological Society of London, 1831-51. Natural history collector.
