"The Undiscovered (2010) series manipulates documentary and staged photography to provide a modern Indigenous perspective on European colonisation in Australia. The artist shifts roles and viewer perspectives on the notion of European colonisation of Australia, reflecting upon habitual ways of thinking and seeing our history."--Information from acquisitions documentation.
Michael Cook's Undiscovered (2010) series prints questions notions of the 'discovery' of occupied lands and examines the coming of the colonial through seaside dreamscapes. These images show the arrival of the tall ships that brought irreversible change to Aboriginal people and the Australian continent. However, the red-coated explorer that appears is not the colonial hero-thief Captain James Cook but an Aboriginal man dressed in British naval attire arriving in a tinnie.--Information from reference source.
- Biography/History:
-
"Michael Cook is a Brisbane born Indigenous photographer with Bidjara heritage. Adopted into a non-indigenous family at three weeks old, Cook's quest to understand his identity and learn about his Indigenous culture is apparent in his photographs. Despite starting his photographic career later in life, Cook received the 2008 'Visual artist of the Year' at the 14th Annual Deadly Awards. Since then Cook has received many awards, showcased photography in both group and solo exhibtions, and undertaken photographic commissions in Australia, Asia and the USA."--Information from acquisitions documentation.
