- Research by Black has found three James Cooks employed by the Royal Navy in the early 1760s. (Black, Jeanette D. Two many Cooks, in The Map Collector, 1986, no. 34, pp. 10-15).
- The cartographer of this map should not be confused with his more famous namesake, the explorer Captain James Cook (1728-1779), who mapped the east coast of Australia in 1770.
