"This project was undertaken to design, develop and test an instrumented wirelss data-acquisition surface sub that is mounted on a drill string below the drill head and used to infer downhole parameters from surface measurements. Data recorded at the surface during drilling operations would be transmitted in real-time to a local computer using wireless communication and then be processed and presented to the driller to detect undesirable drilling conditions and help optimize drilling rates and maximize the life of the bit in real-time. The wireless sub is designed to measure the axial force (weight) and torque acting on the drill string, drilling fluid pressure and temperature, and also three axes of accelerations (centripetal, tangential, and axial to the sub cross-section). The data is transferred in real-time to the local computer using wireless communication and also saved into its memory for offline download at the end of each run. This report presents several laboratory and field testing that were carried out during the development of the wireless sub. Laboraty experiments were carried out at the Drilling Mechanics Group laboratory, CSIRO, located in Kensington, Western Australia; and the field tests were conducted at the DET CRC research facility using a Boart Longyear SC9 surface diamond core drill rig located in Brukunga, Southern Australia" -- Executive summary.
