-
Joe Puglisi, OAM is a pioneer of the tuna fishing industry in Australia. At the age of 7, he and his younger brother were placed by their father in a Catholic Convent School in Sydney. They were treated as though they were orphans. At the age of 13, Joe was banished by his father to live and work on a fishing boat in Kiama harbour. From a tough beginning, through sheer determination and hard work over the next 40 years, he grew to be a leader in the Australian fishing industry and a world supplier and award-winning export marketer of Australian seafoods. His representative work for the fishing industry and early development of tuna farming saw him recognised with the Centenary medal and then awarded the Order of Australia Medal for service to the tuna fishing industry and to the community of Port Lincoln, South Australia. From being an abused child, to becoming an international business leader and a public benefactor, Joe Puglisi's life story of taking risks, working hard and being obsessively determined, is a testament to what can be achieved at the university of life.
