- Summary:
-
Glenn Martin is a fourth-generation Australian. All of his direct ancestors left the British Isles for Australia between 1838 and 1860 - mostly great great grandparents, but some accompanied by an older or younger generation. They left from Cornwall, elsewhere in England, and from Scotland and Ireland, sailing in eleven voyages. Three of them were convicts; the others were free settlers. Some of them were small children in the company of their parents; some of them were young couples; and others were older parents who left their homeland with all of their children. This book explores the reasons why they came, and what they did when they got here. The book presents a microcosm of the migration of people to a vibrant and often turbulent new colonial society.
