“After dropping out of first year law in Melbourne, Barry set of north looking for work on the land. The Last Gift is the story of his adventures over a lifetime. Born in 1932, he recalls the Second World War through the eyes of a child and his escape from a suburban middle class family to go jackerooing in the Northern Territory. Finding love in Queensland he married Margot, just before disaster struck. He escaped the constraints of a heavily indebted farm in Gympie to manage coconut plantations in the Solomon Islands and New Guinea in the 1960s. Upon returning to Australian with his young family, he became a salesman. He soon escaped again, taking a job as a lighthouse keeper on the Queensland coast. Blessed with a capable and adventurous wife, he gave up the safety of a job with the lighthouse department to take to sea in their 35 food ketch, Tatura. This time, it was Margot who eventually felt the constraints of life afloat. The pair moved ashore and built their own mudbrick home in the bush near Bowen, Queensland. In The Last Gift, Barry reveals how he was able to follow his dreams, all the same time illuminating life in post war Australia.”--Back cover.
