Clergyman and sociologist. Johannis (Hans) Mol was born in the Netherlands in 1922 and emigrated to Australia in 1948. In Sydney he was ordained as a Presbyterian minister and was appointed chaplain to Dutch immigrants. Mol studied in the United States and in 1956 he graduated as a Master of Arts at Union Theological Seminary in New York. In 1961 Mol graduated from Columbia University with a Ph.D. in sociology. His first academic appointment was at the University of Canterbury in New Zealand. In 1963 he became a fellow in the Research School of Social Sciences at the Australian National University. In 1970 he accepted a professorship in the sociology of religion at McMaster University in Canada where he remained until his retirement in 1987. Mol is the author of numerous chapters in books, articles and publications including Religion in Australia: a sociological investigation (1971), The firm and the formless: religion and identity in aboriginal Australia (1982), and, How God hoodwinked Hitler (1987) about his wartime experiences. Mol was secretary and then president of the Sociology of Religion Research Committee of the International Sociological Association, 1970-1978. In 2001 Mol established the Hans Mol Endowment Fund at ANU.
