- Summary:
-
It is acknowledged as a fascinating form of aesthetic self-reference and yet hardly perceived in its complexity: The Mise en abyme - a figure of reflection that can be described in the broadest sense as the incorporation of one work of art into another. In the fusion of mirror image and art image, it suggests a dissolution of the ontological dichotomies of art and reality. But more than that: The Mise en abyme shows to what extent artistic signs are not only determined by contexts, but also simultaneously shift and change them. Charlotte Gauger illustrates these theoretical considerations in the analysis of literary texts by Michael Ende, Markus Zusak and Aldous Huxley.
