Choking, suffocating or strangulating someone is a key predictor of domestic homicide and was introduced as a domestic violence crime in Queensland in May 2016. This paper presents data on offenders and sentencing outcomes for this offence, relating to the 404 cases sentenced between 2016-17 and 2017-18. Information is presented on offender age and gender, Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander offenders, type of plea, associated offences, prior offending, custodial penalties, and length of sentence. No information is available at this stage on the victim of the offence, including their gender and relationship to the offender.
