- 1 level : brass, glass ; 34.1 x 15.8 cm, in wooden box 18.5 x 36.7 x 7.2 cm + 1 spirit level in cylindrical wooden case (9.5 x 2.3 cm),1 metal protractor (6.9 x 10.2 cm), 1 tripod (137 cm)
- Notes:
-
- A brass and glass land surveying level in rectangular wooden box. This appears to be a surveying instrument suitably adapted for measuring the vertical rise or fall of ground for each 100 feet of horizontal distance. The instrument is in fair 'as-used' condition but is missing the level bubble and one of the uprights that would have supported the level bubble. Stored in case with telescope in horizontal position.
- "For instance, to construct a drain with a given fall per 100 feet, set the index to the figure indicating the given fall, and then the differences of the readings on a staff, placed on different stations along the route of the drain, will indicate the difference of the depths to which to go at these points, to come to the position for the bottom of the drain."--References: Heather, J.F. (1891) Surveying and Astronomical Instruments volume III, Crosby Lockwood and Son, London.
- Wooden box has a hinged lid with hooks to hold the lid shut. Contains white sticker on inside with handwritten text in black ink "Railway 1...tripod" "1/no/ x/1/L".
- Accompanied by a brass spirit level stored in a cylindrical wooden case and metal protractor.
