- Summary:
-
"This poster, found with other posters of political protest, relates to the walk-off of over 200 stockmen, servants, and their families at the Northern Territory Wave Hill Station in August 1966. It was published in Sydney by A. J. Kelly, 22 Steam Mill Street, Sydney. This is the same address as Comment Publishing Company ( which later became Southwood Press), established in 1966 by Roger Barnes and Sylvia Hale, to publish left-wing material, especially the short lived radical magazine Comment (April 1966 to March 1967). A. J. Kelly also printed the Australian satirical Oz Magazine. The poster, authorized by the novelist Frank Hardy, neatly encapsulates the grievances of the Gurindji people against the multinational food company, Vestey Brothers, the owners of the vast cattle station. Protesting against their pay, work conditions, and the dispossession of their lands, the Gurindjis, led by Vincent Lingiari, finally saw the passing of the first land rights legislation in 1974, and the subsequent partial return of their homelands." -Louella Kerr.
- Biography/History:
-
The British-owned Vestey pastoral company, led by Lord Samuel George Armstrong Vestey, 3rd Baron Vestey (born 1941), was a large international meat producer with interests in other agricultural products, listed on the poster as: Donald Cook: Tinned vegetables and fruit; Villawool: Knitting wools and yarns; Dewhurst: butchers; Hamper, Trim & Imperial: Canned meat products; and Sunvalley: Potato chips.
