"Lang Farm Estate Toowong follows development from Crown Land sales in the 1890s, to Richard Galley's 1877 subdivision and further subdivision in modern times. The book chronicles the lives of the early purchasers, the houses they built and the community they created. The area was once home to prominent local identities including businessman TE White who owned several properties, as well as teacher Hercules Smith, siblings Florence and Cecil Perrin, and Brisbane couturier Janet Walker. There were politicians including mayors Harry Diddims and Archibald Watson, Prime Minister Sir Arthur Fadden and politician Charles Boydell Dutton. There were doctors Alex Marks, his son Charles Marks, Sir Raphael and Lady Cliento; as well as musicians Samual Kaye and Henrietta Mallalieu. Some have been remembered in local landmarks such as Kaye's Rocks and Perrin Park, while others have their names on modern developments: Mallalieu Court and Cliento Cove. Early residents worked hard to improve roads, fundraise for churches, create a school and contribute to society. The original Toowong State School building has since been relocated to the present school site in Kate Street but some of the stately homes still exist today: including Klarraba, Milverton, Earlethorme, Venah and The Deli. The book provides background on all the properties and early owners, with brief updates about subsequent occupants. There are maps and photos of the streets and houses, showing areas of Lang Farm Estate then and now."--Back cover.
